At the Second International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS 2) held in August 2001 in Berlin, the German Association for Social Science Research on Japan (VSJF) organized a roundtable discussion on:
Searching for Best Practices in International Research Cooperation:
The Case of Social Science Research on Japan
The panelists were:
John Campbell, University of Michigan, former longtime Secretary-Treasurer of the Assocation for Asian Studies (AAS)
jccampbell@umich.edu
Glenn Hook, Director of the Graduate School of East Asian Studies, University of Sheffield, and currently President of the British Association for Japanese Studies (BAJS)
g.hook@sheffield.ac.uk
Klaus Vollmer, Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich, President of the VSJF – German Association for Social Science Research on Japan

The panelists and a lively round of participants discussed the current state of international cooperation in social science research on Japan, as well as ideas for ways to intensify such cooperation.
Three proposals found unanimous support at the roundtable:
1. The VSJF will set up a "
meta-website" offering links to Japan-related sites and information about funding possibilities.
2. To enhance the visibility of European researchers,
English abstracts of journal articles and monographs will be published on the VSJF website.
3.The VSJF will further pursue the plan to organize an
international workshop or conference for Japan-related social scientists preferably before ICAS 3.
For details of the discussion, please see the
summary ›› prepared by Friederike Bosse (VSJF).
The VSJF will now actively seek to put these proposals into practise. For further information please contact the VSJF board member for international contacts,
