Support for the independence of the Science Council of Japan

The German Association for Social Science Research on Japan (VSJF) sent the following supportive message to the Joint Statement by the Academic Societies of the Humanities and Social Sciences on the Refusal to Appoint Nominees as Council Members to the 25th Term of the Science Council of Japan:

As an academic association of researchers and students from the field of Japan related studies in German speaking countries, we have a deep interest in Japan and appreciate our longstanding cooperation with Japanese academics and institutions alike. We highly value academic freedom, autonomy and democracy. Thus we are deeply concerned about Prime Minister Suga’s decision to reject the candidacy of six humanity and social science scholars for the Science Council of Japan, and wholeheartedly support the Joint Statement of Japanese Academic Societies to Protect the Independence of the Science Council of Japan.
